Community Space for Courage, Creativity and Health
Dedicated to the memory of Barry and Molly Adams, who gave their time, energy, and care to their community, without fanfare, concern for recognition or reward, or any other fuss.
What is Motts Corners?
Motts Corners is a small community venue focused on connecting those who have a message or a talent to share, with those who feel inspired to learn something new -- or those who want to get away from the daily stresses of life, or give an outlet to their creativity, or transform their frustrations into acts of courage. Essentially, any activity that can be done in a small group might appear on the Motts Corners agenda, if there is a leader to organize the activity and a few people at a minimum who would like to attend (and if Emily and Paulus, the owners, think it sounds like fun).
Photographs by Nadia Sablin, taken during her visit to Brooktondale while in residency at Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts.
Emily and Paulus hope that Motts Corners will especially attract people who have given a lot to the community but who tend to put their own personal needs last. The givers need to be the receivers sometimes, too, because otherwise our society risks losing so many important members to burnout or illness. Teachers, political activists, health care providers, care providers with responsibilities for young children, elders, or disabled family members, civil servants, writers and artists... all these society-level caregivers deserve appreciation and "a day at the spa" to relax and restore their batteries. Emily and Paulus would like to recognize one (or more) valuable society caregivers each month, with a free individualized healing treatment, above and beyond access to the group activities described on this website. If you would like to nominate someone (or yourself) for such a treatment, please reach out.
Here are some of the activities that *might* show up on the agenda, if there is enough interest among both potential instructors and potential participants:
* taiko drumming workshops with Paulus
* healing exchanges between therapists / students
* potluck meal and social time
* dinner with international theme, involving international students at Cornell
* art therapy class
* healing sound bath (receive/experience it, or participate in making sounds)
* make political art together (posters, banners, drama...)
* cooking class
* improve your health with fun PT exercises
* improve your health with myofunctional therapy
* improve your health with acupuncture
* immigrant solidarity & mutual aid for Brooktondale
Emily and Paulus have many ideas... but they don't know what other people might like to do, unless they get feedback! Please fill out this survey. If a particular topic generates a fair amount of interest, they will finalize plans, look at possible dates, send out a date/time survey to the people who expressed interest, and then get the activity on the agenda, where perhaps a few more people will see it and sign up, or add their names to a waiting list.
Welcome to the community!

What is on the agenda?
A private event by invitation only, August 19th and/or September 2nd. If you've been invited, you know who you are! If you haven't been invited, it might have been a simple oversight or an overactive spam filter -- reach out and ask me.
Rise Up Singing, Wednesday August 26th My friend Ginny will attend with her guitar, "Rise up singing" song books, and her great song leading ability -- and we'll all sing. I have extra guitars as well, and other instruments. Everyone gets to suggest a favorite song, in turn, and there is no pressure. We'll sing out in the garden if the weather is nice, or inside in the living room.
The idea is to repeat this Song Circle on the 4th Wednesday of every month... we'll see how that goes!
Times: Doors open at 5:30. For those who would like to eat together, we will eat at 6 pm (potluck style), and then we'll start singing at 6:30. If you can't arrive until 7 pm, no problem... just come on in and there may even be a little food left in the kitchen. We'll stop by 8:30.
If you are coming, or might come, kindly give a sign in advance to help with planning: 607-708-0342, emilyfinnadams@gmail.com

What happened recently?
We were joined by my friend and inspiration, Mary Milne, for a Sewing Circle, where a number of us worked on quilt squares to submit to the National Quilt Project. Mary's fabric art is widely known and appreciated (two of her pieces even hang in the Ithaca City Hall). See her complete works here: Mary's Collected Works, Organized.
Mary will be collecting squares through 2030, to add to the website's gallery and then eventually to display at a large event in Washington DC. She would love to have more squares from Ithaca. If you've been looking for a creative way to contribute something hopeful right now, learn how to proceed on her website... or join us at Motts Corners for another Sewing Circle in the future.
